"What a strange power there is in clothing."

Isn't it strange to think that with everything we wear, we're showing people who we are? In fact, this is why we started to adorn ourselves, to wear clothes, and be fashionable--not to keep us warm, as some practical souls might think, but to identify ourselves as individuals in a larger world. And so begins the age-old challenge of how to fit in with our society yet also express a sense of self.
Fortunately, we now have lots of room to play with style. And lately, I've begun experimenting with making over men's jackets into clothing for women. I love men's jackets. There's something about the natural, gorgeous fabrics, the elegance of the cut, and that the hard work of making the lapel collar is already done. Producing these jackets pushes me into questions about the creative process, about taste levels, and questions of identity.
When I told a friend that I was cutting up men's jackets and re-making them for women she said, "Wow. You must have some real issues with men!" If you're interested in seeing more of my issues with men, I'm developing a website to sell these jackets and also to detail the process of making them. I'd so appreciate a visit from you. www.laughingrags.com
